How to start a fashion brand in 2021?

Starting a fashion business may not be a simple task. It takes both creativity and business acumen to make the brand work and turn a profit.

A creative flair will allow you to create unique products that interest your audience, while your business sense will see you through the difficult early stages and allow you to grow your start-up into a successful brand.

When starting up, the to-do’s can be overwhelming. Here are our top areas to cover.

1. Decide on your Niche

A niche is the area of expertise in which you will specialize. Choosing a niche for your business makes building a business easier and faster by allowing you to concentrate your efforts on a single area of expertise and connecting you with a focused and interested audience. When you focus on a single niche, you can more easily identify your ideal customer and approach them with targeted marketing. At the same time, you build expert status, which speeds up the process of your prospects coming to know, like, and trust you. That’s essential to turning prospects into paying customers.

Know your niche, and bear it in mind. Even if you branch out and introduce lots of other designs as time goes by, your original idea gives you heritage, a guiding principle, and a reason to be remembered.

2. Build your Budget

Having a realistic idea of your startup costs is an essential part of business planning and reduces the chance of running out of funding before your clothing line has launched. The most common reasons why startups fail is not having enough budget to see them through the initial stages.

Examples of Start Up Costs:

Business Registration

Website Development and Hosting

  Editorial and E-Commerce Photography

  IT Hardware

 Office Supplies

  Stock

It’s important to start planning how to Prepare a Budget and Forecast a Cash Flow before making a decision about setting up a business. If you’re unable to finance your project on your own, there are many various Sources of Business Start-up Support and Finance for Starting a Business.

3.    Choose the Right Business Legal Structure

Anyone starting a new business needs to decide which legal structure it will have, and before starting up should carefully consider the issues involved.

You will need to either register a limited company or start operating as a sole trader. Read our guide to Choosing the Right Business Legal Structure or Setting up in Business as a Sole Trader to study all pros and cons of both options and decide what’s going to be best in your personal circumstances.

4. Create your Brand

When you start your own clothing brand, you cannot understate the importance of your brand identity  – especially in the world of fashion. Clothing is very personal because our clothing choices are one of the ways that we define our identity – to both ourselves and to the world. As a result, the brands we choose to wear and the labels we display on our clothes become an extension of who we are and how we see ourselves.

Therefore, choosing the right Business and Company Name and creating a company logo really matters here!

5. Find a Manufacturer

Go back to your design work and get everything together. It’s time to take your product to the manufacturers. This is the point where you’ll be sourcing the person (or team) that’s going to take your designs and make them a reality. If you’re intending to make everything yourself for now, you can skip this step!

Once you’ve decided, it’s time to have a sample made. Get your chosen manufacturer to run a small batch of your designs and maybe test them against those from another manufacturer. Factor in time to discuss adjustments and improvements, before you pull the trigger on a full product run.

6. Take your Products to Market

You’ve tested out your product and you’re ready to order your first full product run. It’s time to get serious about selling your product. Well done! Good luck!
