The Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012, widely known as the Social Value Act, introduced a legal requirement for public authorities in England and Wales to consider how their procurement decisions can deliver ‘social value’ (defined as social, economic or environmental benefits) for the local area in which they operate. Similar requirements apply in Scotland under the Procurement Reform (Scotland) Act 2014 but there is no equivalent legislation in Northern Ireland.
