A Guide to Managing Employee Sickness Absence

Any business that employs staff will experience employee absence and in some cases this absence can be disruptive and costly to the business.

It is important to understand how to deal with absence effectively in order to minimise any disruption and ensure that employees are treated fairly.

A written absence policy can provide employers with a structure for handling short-term and long-term absences, as well as providing clear procedures for employees to follow when informing their employer that they will be absent.

This factsheet sets out the information that an absence policy should contain and suggests ways of monitoring and dealing with absence in a consistent and systematic way.

This factsheet deals with unplanned absences, for example when an employee does not attend work because they are unwell. It does not deal with planned absences such as maternity or paternity leave, staff training, or jury service.
