A Guide to Discipline and Grievance Procedures

Disciplining employees and dealing with their grievances needs to be carried out fairly and according to clear procedures to ensure that employers do not contravene employment legislation or breach their employees' rights.

This factsheet explains the situations that disciplinary and grievance procedures are used for. It also provides information about the Acas Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures (which applies in England, Wales and Scotland) and the Labour Relations Agency Code of Practice (which applies in Northern Ireland). These codes set out what employers should do to ensure that they meet their obligations when dealing with disciplinary and grievance matters.

Employment legislation is complicated and this factsheet is intended as a starting point only. Professional advice should be sought before any decisions are made.
