The sale and supply of alcohol in the UK is strictly regulated in order to prevent crime and disorder, protect the public, prevent public nuisance and protect children from harm.
In England and Wales, licensing authorities regulate the sale and supply of alcohol under the Licensing Act 2003.
The retail sale or supply of alcohol must be authorised by one or more alcohol licences. Unauthorised sale or supply of alcohol is an offence punishable by a fine of up to £20,000 or a six-month term of imprisonment.
