A Guide to the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 require that work equipment is suitable for the purpose for which it is used or provided

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 require that work equipment is suitable for the purpose for which it is used or provided, and that any risks to workers’ health and safety from equipment are prevented or controlled. The Regulations, known as PUWER, define equipment as “any machinery, appliance, apparatus, tool or installation for use at work”.

PUWER applies in England, Wales and Scotland. In Northern Ireland, work equipment is covered by the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1999.

This factsheet explains what is covered by PUWER, how to comply with the law, and penalties for non-compliance.
