A chauffeur hire service differentiates itself from similar businesses, such as private hire and special event hire services, by providing uniformed chauffeurs who are impeccably presented and can be relied upon to respect clients’ privacy and observe strict protocols relating to etiquette, confidentiality and security.
Some chauffeur hire services also provide chauffeured limousines and vintage cars for a range of occasions, including weddings, school proms, concerts and sporting events. However, this is covered separately in BOP536 Limousine and Special Event Vehicle Hire. Some chauffeur hire services provide chauffeurs to drive vehicles owned by the client (a ‘chauffeur only’ service), such as a hotel proprietor who requires cover for an in-house chauffeur.
A chauffeur hire service must be licensed as a private hire vehicle (PHV) service. Exact licensing requirements vary according to where in the UK the service is based and operates, although separate licences are usually required for business operators, individual chauffeurs and individual vehicles.
